Arthur "Art" G. Lewis, 90, of Benton, IL, died at 5:36 p.m. Saturday, August 16, 2014, at Franklin Hospital, Benton, IL. Mr. Lewis was born on June 15, 1924, in Benton, IL, the son of B.A. Lewis and Carrie (Beaty) Lewis. He was united in marriage to the former Beulah (Gibbs) Lewis on September 6, 1988, in the First Baptist Church of Middletown, OH. Beulah preceded him in death on September 20, 2008. Art attended the Benton Grade Schools and a 1942 Graduate of Benton Township High School. Mr. Lewis was a Veteran of World War II, Serving in the European theater of operations with the 2009th Ordinance Company in England-Normandy, France-Northern France-Central Europe from 1943 to 1945. Art then attended Southern Illinois University from 1948 - 1952 where he received his Elementary Teachers Certificate. He was a Retired Public Relations Representative for Cinergy Corp. for the Northern Division Office in Middletown, OH. Art also was a former Law Enforcement Officer for the City of Benton, and a Special Deputy Sheriff for Sheriff Paul Collins-Franklin County. Art was a Charter-Life Member of the World War II D-Day Museum in New Orleans, LA, a Lifetime-Charter Member of the World War II National Memorial in Washington, D.C., Member of the Association of the United States Army, Arlington, VA Fort Sheridan, Chicago Chapter, a Life Member of SIU Alumni Association, an Associate Member of the Illinois Sheriffs Association, a Life Member of V.F.W. Post 2671, Benton, IL and the American Legion Post 280, Benton, IL. Surviving relatives include his son, Art G. Lewis and wife Carmen of Sacramento, CA, three grandchildren, Chris and Patrick Lewis both of Germantown, OH, and Jason Lewis of Sacramento, CA, four great-grandchildren, Hanna, Haley, Clacey, and Ericka, nephews and nieces, Richard Kondritz and wife Kay of Benton, IL, Fred Kondritz and wife Kaye of Benton, IL, Dixie Andrews (deceased husband Henry Andrews) of Benton, IL, Larry Parrish and wife Jane of Ballwin, MO, Ronald Parrish and wife Brenda of Paducah, KY and many cousins. Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his wife, parents, a brother, Vernon A. Lewis, four sisters, Thelma Hawthorne, Fleta Strange, Ruth Kondritz and Dorthea Parrish. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Benton food pantry. Graveside Service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton, IL with Rev. Bill Carter Officiating. Military honors will be performed by the Benton American Legion/V.F.W. and the Army Honor Guard.
