Berthal "Bert" D. Atchison, 81, of Benton, died at 6:52 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the Franklin Hospital in Benton, IL. Bert was born in Ewing, IL on August 6, 1926, the son of Fred "Fritz" Atchison and Veda (Underwood) Atchison. He married the former Joyce Sullivan on March 27, 1983 and she survives. He retired as a carpenter for the Carpenter"s Local 272 in Chicago Heights, IL and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving for nine years. He loved deer hunting, fishing, woodworking, and gardening and was a life member of the Benton American Legion and Benton V.F.W. Surviving relatives include his wife, Joyce Atchison, Benton, IL, his loving children, Jutta Waldrop, Germany, Alicia and husband Ron Blackwell, Essex, IL, Barbara and husband Ron Johnson, Michigan, James Underwood, Benton, IL, Jerry and wife Sue Underwood, Momence, IL, Rhonda Howell, Benton, IL, Kathy and husband Steve Eaton, Steele, MO, Jonathan Underwood, Bartonville, IL, Mary Underwood, Benton, IL, twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, one brother, Cecil Atchison, Benton, IL, one son-in-law, Joseph Hall, Jr., Thompsonville, IL, three sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Atchison was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Lillie Kay Hall, one granddaughter at birth, one great-grandson, two brothers, and his first wife, Janie (Kays) Atchison. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 21, 2008 at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton, IL. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Cecil Atchison officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton, IL with military rites performed by the Benton American Legion and V.F.W.
