Charles "Dick" Richard Smith, 79, of Benton, passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2016, at Herrin Hospital, Herrin, IL.
He was born on June 29, 1936, to Charles and Marjorie (Smith) Smith in Benton. Dick retired as a Coal Miner/Maintenance Forman for Freeman United Coal Co. On May 29, 1970, he married Donna Joyner.
In his youth Dick was a professional pianist, graduating from the University of Chicago Sherwood School of Music, a 32nd degree Mason and part of the Motorcycle Unit in the Shriners. Later in life Dick's passions were traveling and enjoyed RV camping with his wife Donna and friends. He loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dick enjoyed eating blackberry cobbler and ice cream.
Dick is survived by his three children, Valerie Kaye Durham of NM, Charles Byron Smith of Orient, IL and Scott Allen Ralls and wife Andrea of York Town, NY; six grandchildren, Emma Kaye Ralls, Sydney Blythe Ralls, Bailey Alana Ralls, Joshua Byron Smith and wife Lora Walsh, Alex Tyler Smith and wife Amanda, and Anna Elizabeth Lane and husband Randy; three great-grandchildren, Zadok Owens Smith, Aletta Fontabel Smith and Alivia JoAnn Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles L. and Marjorie Lee Smith; wife, Donna Kaye Smith; a infant sister, Pat Smith.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 2, 2016, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Pate Funeral Home, 301 South Main Street, Benton, IL.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2016, 11:00 am at the Pate Funeral Home, Benton, IL, with Bill Carter, officiating.
Burial will take place in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in Benton.
