David Gary Smothers - Benton, IL David G. Smothers, 62, of Benton, died at 5:46 a.m. Friday, November 23, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon. He was born on May 16, 1950 in Benton, the son of Clarence Smothers and Mildred (Scrutchfield) Smothers. Gary resided in Benton for most of his sixty-two years and served his country in the Naval Reserve. He was a member of the Benton American Legion and Eagles. He was known to his siblings as the "big brother" that would always protect his family and friends. Gary was kind at heart and would always lend a helping hand to anyone he knew. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Surviving relatives include his granddaughter, Kaley Smothers, Logan, IL, his fiance, Lisa Miller, Benton, IL, six siblings, Susan Wilson, Jim Smothers, William "Bill" Smothers, Randy (Linda) Smothers, all of Benton, IL, Sandra (Tom) Schmidt, Hays, KS, Debra (Leonard) Holthaus, Marion, IL, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mr. Smothers was preceded in death by his parents and one son, David Wayne Smothers. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 26, 2012 at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in Benton. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Roger Webb officiating. Interment of his cremated remains will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012 in the Jones Cemetery, Logan, IL with military honors performed by the Benton American Legion Post 280, V.F.W.
