Dempsey SummersThompsonville, IL Dempsey Summers, 98, of Thompsonville, IL, passed away peacefully at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at Herrin Hospital with his family by his bedside. Mr. Summers was born on February 15, 1914 near Akin, IL the son of Eli Wilson Summers and Nellie (Miller) Summers. He married the former Louise Scelonge on May 18, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. She preceded him in death on May 6, 1987. He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Summers, Desoto, Susan (William) O Shea, West Frankfort, a granddaughter, Lynne Johnston Westra, Carterville, two great-grandchildren, Patrick and Megan Westra, Carterville, a sister, Ruth McClerren, Paducah, KY and several nieces and nephews. Dempsey was a member of the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) and served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner on merchant ships in the Pacific during WW II. He worked as a machinist in Chicago and farmed for many years on his farm near Thompsonville. He was an avid hunter and gunsmith. Mr. Summers was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, Oren and Paul Summers and two sisters, May Plasters and Agnes Hatchett. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in Benton. Interment will be in the Brady Cemetery in Akin with military rites performed by the Thompsonville American Legion and National Guard Honor Squad in Marion, IL.
