George Truman Schram - Benton, IL George Truman Schram, 81, of Benton, IL, passed away peacefully with his family at his side at 5:23 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Herrin Hospital. Mr. Schram was born on March 12, 1929 in Benton, IL, the son of Oness Schram and Celia (McAdoo) Schram. He married the former Patsy Ruth Gieselman on July 19, 1952 and she preceded him in death on June 25, 2009. George served in the U.S. Army for 20 years attaining the rank of Sgt. First Class. He was a member of the 497th Corp. of Engineers and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He received the Silver Star medal, two Bronze Star medals, and numerous other commendations. He traveled extensively around the world while serving in the Army. After retirement from the military, George worked out of the Operator Engineers Local 318 and worked on several construction projects including Rend Lake, Interstate 57, and Fort Massac in Metropolis, IL. He also was a member of the U.M.W.A. and worked at several mines in Southern Illinois underground and as a surface supervisor. He is survived by his two children, George Thomas (Ruth Ann) Schram, Johnston City, IL, Beverly Jane (Scott) Pearcy, Acworth, GA, five grandchildren, Amy (John) Hepler, Christina (Brandon) Leehy, Jared Schram, TSgt. Joseph (Jennifer) Pearcy, Jenna Pearcy and her fiance Daniel Driggers, five great-grandchildren, Haley, Cameron, and Tristen Leehy, Arilyn Hardcastle and Johnnie Hepler, two sisters and three brothers, Jean (Harold) Summers, Jack (Margaret) Schram, Joyce (Jim) Ragan, Paul Schram, Pete (Beverly) Schram, a sister-in-law, Geraldine Ahlfeld, Benton, IL, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Schram was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ramona Lewis and Elizabeth Hernandez, and two brothers, Bill and Bob Schram. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton, IL. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Michael Glasco officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton, IL. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Benton, IL.
