Ida K. Rhodes - Benton, IL Ida K. Rhodes, 96, of Benton, IL, died at 12:42 p.m. Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at Stonebridge Senior Living Center, Benton, IL. Mrs. Rhodes was born on June 6, 1914 in Kell, IL the daughter of James Davis Kell and Maude (Brasel) Kell. She married Claude Rhodes and he preceded her in death on January 14, 1979. Ida graduated from Benton Township High School in 1932 and received her Bachelor and Master degrees in Education from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1959 and 1963, respectively. She taught school at the Old Country School in Hill City and later at Logan Grade School in Benton, IL retiring after 25 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Benton, IL and was the 2002 Benton Citizen of the Year. Ida was a member of many organizations in her lifetime including Delta Sigma Epsilon Sorority, Benton Youth Board, Benton Public Library Board, Meals on Wheels, American Association of University Women, Daughters of the American Revolution, Benton Womens Club, Retired Teachers Association, Home Extension, and the Tuesday Ladies sewing group. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, ceramics, and playing Bridge. Surviving relatives include two daughters-in-law, Phyllis Rhodes, Marion, IL, Carol Rhodes, Benton, IL, five grandchildren, Rebecca Gambrill, Lothian, MD, Jim Rhodes, St. Louis, MO, Victoria (Stacy) Hayes, Burke, VA, Christy (Herc) Noblitt, St. Louis, MO, Laurie Rhodes, St. Louis, MO, nine great-grandchildren, Ryan and Reanna Gambrill, Joshua, Jessica, Cassie, Carrie, and Colby Noblitt, Claudia and Jake Hayes, four nieces, Mary Dillon, Benton, IL, Mary Jane Shavitz, Evansville, IN, Pat Hall, Louisville, KY, Jeannie Meisner, Hays, VA, a nephew, William "Buddy" Purnell, Louisville, KY, a great-nephew, Chuck Doty, Olive Branch, IL, and several other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mrs. Rhodes was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Dave and Jim Rhodes, and four sisters, Rosalie Dillon, Gail Bartleson, Florence Purnell, and Esther "Pat" Walker. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, September 18, 2010 at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton, IL. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Shook officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton, IL.
