JAMES P. SMOTHERs - Benton, IL James (Jim) P. Smothers, age 61, passed in Benton, IL. On January 24, 2014. Jim was born in Benton, IL on May 1, 1952, the son of Clarence Smothers and Mildred (Scrutchfield) Smothers. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his sister Susan Wilson and his brother David G. Smothers, all of Benton. Jim was a graduate of Benton High and Rend Lake College. He was employed by the American Legion and VFW of Benton. Jim was a member of Sons of American Legion, post 280 and President of the VFW Men's Auxiliary, Post 2671. Jim was a loving, caring brother and was known as the family cut-up who could always brighten our days with fun and laughter. He was considered a friend by everyone that knew him and he enjoyed each day to the fullest. He enjoyed dancing, ballgames and being surrounded by his friends and family. He is survived by his daughter, Megan Bowlin, of Sesser and two grandchildren, Lily and Travis. He is also survived by his brother, William "Bill" Smothers and Randy Smothers, both of Benton, IL., his sisters, Debra Holthaus of Marion, IL. and Sandi Schmidt of Hays, KS. and several nieces and nephews. Jim will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was taken too early in life, but will be remembered with the joy and laughter and love that he shared with us all. The family appreciates the friendship and caring support of those he knew and loved, especially to Troy Doty and John Metzger. There will be a memorial/benefit and gathering held at the American Legion in Benton, (Wednesday) January 29th at 5:30pm. Dinner will be served. Please come join us in Jim's remembrance.
