Obituary

John Corn - Benton, IL John Corn, 85, of Benton, IL, died at 2:08 p. m. Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the DeKalb County Nursing Center in Dekalb, Illinois. He was born on August 16, 1927 in Macedonia, Illinois, the youngest son of Walter Cordova Corn and Delsie Bessie (Harrelson) Corn. He married the former Mariam McKemie on August 14, 1949 and she preceded him in death on June 8, 2010. They enjoyed over sixty years of marriage together. John graduated from Benton High School in 1945 and joined the U.S. Army. After World War II, he attended Southern Illinois University where he was the co-captain of the 1947 football team which went undefeated that year. He pursued a wide array of careers including teaching in Benton, serving as a FBI agent for eight years, working as a barber at Goodes Barber Shop later to become the Razors Edge, and in 1962 opening a Tastee Freeze Restaurant on McLean Blvd. in Elgin with his brother Ben. His last job was teaching math for over twenty years at Elgin High School. After retirement, John and Mariam moved back to Benton, IL where they lived until Mariam' passing in 2010. Surviving relatives include two sons, Scott Corn and wife Betty, Sycamore, IL, Vance Corn and wife Cindy, Austin, TX, four grandchildren, Jeff Corn and wife Abby, Poplar Grove, IL, and Kyle Corn, Sycamore, IL, Stacy and Michelle Corn, both of Austin, TX, his twin brother, Ben Corn, Elgin, IL, and several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, John Jeffrey "Jeff" Corn, and three siblings, Fern Higdon, Sophia Whetstone, and Shirley Rose Corn. Visitation will be from 9:30 a. m. to 11:00 a. m. Saturday, July 13, 2013 at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home and Crematory in Benton. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a. m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Shane Smith officiating. Military honors will be performed by the Benton American Legion and V.F.W. and the Marion National Guard Honor Squad.
