Leona Munoz Conci - Benton, IL Leona Munoz Conci, 82, of Benton, IL, died at 7:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Green Tree Memory Care, Mt. Vernon, IL. Mrs. Conci was born on June 23, 1929 in West City, IL the daughter of Stanley and Theresa (Nowicki) Zukowski. Leona graduated from Benton High School, attended SIU Carbondale and graduated as a medical technologist from Gradwohl School of Laboratory Technique, St. Louis, MO. It was at Gradwohl where Leona met her first husband, Gilbert Munoz. They eloped to Pocahontas, Arkansas and were married on June 12, 1949. Following graduation and internships in Alexandria, Louisiana they moved to Benton and raised two children. With the opening of Franklin Hospital, Leona and Gilbert became medical technologists for the hospital. When the Benton Medical Center was built, Leona became the owner/technologist of the lab and remained there until her retirement. Gilbert predeceased her in 1975. On June 19, 1986 Leona married Frank Benson Conci, one of her high school classmates. Leona not only gained a new husband but was also graciously welcomed into Franks family by his five children. Frank and Leona enjoyed retirement together by traveling and volunteering in the community. Frank predeceased Leona on July 12, 2010. Leona was also predeceased by her parents and one brother, Dr. Edward Zukowski. She is survived by her children, Karen Munoz and husband Daniel Yuhas, Springfield, IL, John Munoz and wife Lynne Daniels, Mandeville, LA, five grandchildren, Ben Yuhas, Caitlin Yuhas, John Munoz, Jr., Lauren Munoz and Danielle Munoz, five step-children, Terry (Kim) Conci, Craig, CO, Helen (Beecher) Williams, Herod, IL, Frank A. (Ellen) Conci, Mulkeytown, IL, Jan Conci, Golconda, IL, Carmen Conci (Jeff Wetherly), Harrisburg, IL, and nine step-grandchildren, Cara, Brenna, Caitlin, and Kelsey Conci, all of Craig, CO, Jessica (Josh) Wagner, Brownfield, IL, Lauren Williams, Harrisburg, IL, Jared Smith, Colorado Springs, CO, Jake Smith, Golconda, IL, Benson Sheldon, Harrisburg, IL, one step-great-grandchild, Piper Wagner, Brownfield, IL and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory, Benton, IL. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday at the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to the Benton High School Education Foundation, 511 E.
