Melvin "Mel" W. Porter, 77, of Texico, IL, died at 4:08 p.m., Friday, July 18, 2014, at Salem Hospital, Salem, IL. Mr. Porter was born on January 3, 1937, in St. Louis, MO, the son of Ralph Edward Erwin Porter and Opal May (Huff) Porter. He was retired from Granite City Steel, Granite City, IL and a member of the United Steel Workers Union. Prior to his employment at Granite City Steel Melvin worked for MOP Railroad. Surviving relatives include three daughters, Melynn A. Vasquez of Texico, IL, Raina Campbell of Thompsonville, IL, Linda L. Stoker of Iuka, IL, a son, Dwayne "Dino" Porter of Thompsonville, IL, a brother, Erwin A. Porter, a sister, Gail (Tom) Henberry, 10 grandchildren, Jessica Simmons, Kimberly Wilhelm, Amanda Kneibling, Brandy Roosevelt, Dawn Gehner, Teri Deitrich, Crystal Morton, Aaron Stoker, Kelly Stoker-Predium and Andy Stoker, 34 great-grandchildren and his special little dogs, Maggie and Lady dog. Mr. Porter was preceded in death his parents, first wife, Ann Evans, second wife, Leila Rose Lagow, grandson, Tony Postalwait, great-grandson, Ean Michael Kruta and son-in-law, Danny Campbell. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2014, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hobbs Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory, Benton, IL. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at the funeral home with Pastor Sammy Simmons officiating. Burial will follow at Brady Cemetery, Akin, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.
