Sergio Mendez Diaz, 14, of Benton, Illinois, passed away on June 20, 2015, in Logan, Illinois, from an accident. He was born on October 8, 2000, to Cergio and Gloria (Ruiz) Diaz in Chiapas, Mexico. Sergio was a student at Benton Consolidated High School. Sergio was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Benton, Illinois. He was a Cheerleader for the Benton Consolidated High School and was a member of the Gymnastics team. Sergio was a sweet and loving son, full of life, positive, energetic and would never give up on any challenge he faced. He strived to please his family and friends. Sergio loved his pet dog Chispa. Sergio is survived by his parents, Cergio and Gloria (Ruiz) Diaz, two sisters, Litzy Guadalupe Mendez Diaz and Marbella Mendez Diaz; grandparents, Asuncion Mendez Dominguez, Santiago Diaz Dominguez, Marbella Romero Lopez and Guadalupe Ruiz Morales; six uncles, Abraham Mendez Romero, Santos Diaz Ruiz, Miguel Diaz Ruiz, Gerardo Diaz, Keyin Diaz, Roy Diaz; four aunts, Olgalidid Domingues, Oralia Silva, Ariana Diaz, Neyda Diaz; and many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Xavi Mendez Diaz. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 24, 2015 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm at Immanuel Baptist Church, 516 North Main Street, Benton, Illinois. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 2:30 pm at Immanuel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Sammy Simmons, officiating. Burial will follow services at the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in care of funeral expenses.
