Mrs. Johnson was born on October 18, 1919 in Paragould, AR the daughter of George Groves and Dora (Higginbotham) Groves. She married James Jay Johnson in 1934 and he preceded her in death. Vergie was a housewife and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving relatives include six daughters, Alice Johnson, Benton, IL, Julie Kopec, Benton, IL, Melba Foster, Benton, IL, Paulette McPhail, West Frankfort, IL, Judy Shreves, Benton, IL, Mary Fitzpatrick, Benton, IL, twelve grandchildren several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, two half-sisters, Sue Groves, West City, IL, Betty Todd, Rock Springs, WY, a nephew, Jimmy Groves and wife Dena, Benton, IL, a niece, Judy Groves Grammer, of Kentucky, special friend, Helen Groves, Benton, IL. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three daughters, Shirley Faye Burgess, Lovetta Johnson, Janet Francine Johnson, four sons, Jerry, Charles, James, and Richard Johnson, one brother, William Groves, and one sister, Ella Mae Jackson.A private graveside service will be held at the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton, IL.
