William R. Chaplain - Benton, IL William R. "Chatter" Chaplain, 84, of Benton, IL, died at 7:26 p.m. Friday, January 17, 2014 at St. Clair' Hospital, Fenton, MO. Mr. Chaplain was born on August 2, 1929 in Benton, IL the son of Harley Chaplain and Hazel (Bain) Chaplain. He married the former Beverly Boeck on November 16, 1985 and she survives. Mr. Chaplain served in the United States Army Airforce 8th AF 810th Division of 97th Bomb Wing as a Sergeant. He was a 50 year member of First Baptist Church, Benton, IL, a member of the American Legion/V.F.W., Benton, IL, and Boccie Ball Club, Benton, IL. Mr. Chaplain served as President of Franklin County Fair for 18 years. He previously served on the Illinois Department of Public Aid Board of Directors, Benton, IL, Benton Community Bank Board of Directors, Benton, IL, Rend Lake Conservancy District Board of Directors, and the Benton City Economic Development, Benton, IL. William previously worked as investor, owner, operator, producer of many oil wells throughout Southern Illinois, and worked in the coal industry holding UMWA Jobs with Inland Steel, Consolidated Coal, and Old Ben Coal. In 1956 he became the co-owner and operator of McCann-Chaplain Pharmacy, in 1966 the co-owner and operator of Kimmel-Chaplain Pharmacy until 1979, and was the former owner of Southern Illinois Office Mart, Benton, IL. Surviving relatives include his wife, Beverly Chaplain, Benton, IL, children, William P. Chaplain, Carbondale, IL, Todd Andres and wife Dawn, Evergreen, CO, John Andres and wife Hilda, Terre Haute, IN, and Holly Wyant and husband Brian, Thompsonville, IL, six grandchildren, William Gail Chaplain, Meredith Ticer and husband Rob, Alexa Wyant, Neal Andres, Nina Andres, and Adam Andres, one great-grandchild, Abigail Ticer. Mr. Chaplain was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lou Peyton, his parents, his daughter, Leslie Sue Chaplain, his brother, Jack Chaplain, and sister, Frances Henry. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 23, 2014 at the Hobbs Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in Benton. The funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 11:15 a.m. Friday, January 24, 2014 for Burial at Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton with military honors performed by the Benton American Legion/V.F.W. and the Marion National Guard Honor Squad. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Benton Ministerial Alliance and will be accepted at the funeral home.
